To coincide with the anniversary of Roe v Wade later this month, Advocates for Youth’s 1 in 3 Campaign will be creating a list article showing the positive and negative comments you receive when you tell someone you’ve had an abortion. Yes, there are a lot of stigmatizing comments, but we also want to celebrate the support – and we need your help!
We’re looking for people to participate by taking a picture of themselves holding up a sign with a quote on it, representing a comment you heard when you told someone you’ve had an abortion. While we know that there are lots of messages out there in the culture at large that are damaging to all of us, for this project we’re asking only for people to participate if they have had an abortion themselves (anonymity is possible – see below). These images will look similar to the ones done by Project Unbreakable (if you’re unfamiliar with those images, check it out here – major trigger warning for rape/sexual assault).
Please help us make this project a success by taking a photo yourself, and/or by asking your friends, colleagues, and clients to participate.
How to participate:
Take a photo of yourself with the comment written on a piece of paper. We’re asking people to take pictures that answer one or both of these questions:
What’s a terrible (in a mean or stigmatizing way) thing someone has said to you about your abortion?
What’s the most supportive thing someone has said to you about your abortion?
**Please take separate photos if you answer both questions**
**Feel free to attribute the quote to someone (i.e. “my mom” or “the nurse at the clinic”) but please do not include anyone’s names**
Submit photos by January 16 to robyn@advocatesforyouth.org
A note on anonymity: If anyone would like to submit an image anonymously, they can hold the paper over their face. People can also blur their face, or let me know when submitting that they’d like their face to be blurred. Names will only be used if the submitter expressly states that they want it used – if you’d like your name used, please send your name as you’d like it to appear (just first is ok too!) along with your location.
